A retelling of the classic FFVII game's story

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is a free role-playing game developed by Square Enix for mobile. It is part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, which is a subseries of stories and video game spin-offs that both branch off and continue the mainline series' narrative.

Set in the same universe as Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is an attempt to recreate the original series that debuted back in 2002 for home and portable consoles and let modern mobile gamers experience it today. It's currently available as a demo and not much can be done in it yet.

A modern retelling

Final Fantasy VII Remake received plenty of praise and was generally a huge success for Square Enix. Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis came as a bit of a surprise as it's a new undertaking to retell the events of the original Final Fantasy VII's story. It also includes the media spin-off series, Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, which comprises three canon games, and the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis will be episodic in nature. What's more, there is some news circulating that suggests it will follow a monthly release cycle. You can freely choose any chapter from the timeline you want to play. When it comes to combat, it will employ the classic Active Time Battle System that first made its debut in Final Fantasy IV.

The game will be free-to-play, but it will feature a gacha and loot box system that can reward you with character weapons and skins.

A promising remake

The demo opens with a match between beloved characters Cloud and Sephiroth. Interestingly, Cloud turns into Zach as soon as the tables turn against his favor — regardless, he beats Sephiroth in the end anyway. After that, the game begins and the player gets acquainted with what’s new in this remake. It boasts a fairly simple battle system, with automated moves for normal attacks. A series of ATB bars gain power and once they reach a certain threshold, the player can utilize special skills like Braver, Cure, and Thunder.

Moreover, there are Attack and Defense modes that provide diversity to the gameplay. The Limit Break system from previous games is back too, and in Ever Crisis the player can do double the damage by syncing two characters’ Limit Break skills simultaneously. The dialogues come with well-drawn illustrated portraits as well.

Rounding up the series

If you had a great time playing Final Fantasy VII Remake and kind of wished the rest of its spin-off games and stories received a similar treatment, then keep tabs on Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis. It essentially aims to bring the whole Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series to mobile, and that will be worth waiting for when it finally comes out.
